Filters

A difference that you can see, but cannot taste, of course. The properties of both filter papers are completely identical. Natural brown coffee filters are made from unbleached pulp, while white coffee filters are made from bleached pulp. All of our coffee filters can of course be composted with organic waste.

In the early days of filter paper, there were no coffee machines – coffee was brewed by hand back then. They had to pour water into the filter several times using the filter and filter paper sizes available at the time, i.e. 100, 102® etc. – depending on the number of cups required. You could only guess how much finished coffee would end up in the jug. Melitta® invented the "1x filter system" in the sixties. Depending on the size you choose, with these new filters and filter paper, only "1x" water had to be poured (i.e. 1x4® filters poured 1x = 4 cups etc.) and the desired number of cups was achieved – a relief for coffee connoisseurs. For a long time, both the 100 and 1x sizes were available in parallel, as households still had filter bodies for both versions. Almost all appliances now work with "1x4®" filters because it is the optimum size for the quantity of water and coffee required, especially in the main segment of 8 to 10 cup appliances.

You will find information on the correct size of the filter paper in the instructions for use or on the filter holder on your coffeemaker. The right size is particularly important because there is otherwise a risk of tearing or the filter folding over.

For coffee preparation to work optimally, the filter paper needs to be folded in the exact shape of the filter. You do this by folding over the two embossed edges. The filter paper will then rest against the edge of the filter holder and sit deep in the filter insert. Thanks to this good fit, the filter paper cannot fold together during the brewing process.

No, Melitta® coffee filters are not glued; they are exclusively pressed.

For lovers of strong filter coffee, Melitta® Original Intense bring full-bodied enjoyment to the cup. The dense AromaMAX® structure of the filter paper enables a long brewing time, allowing the strong coffee aromas to develop particularly well. In this way, the coffee filter ensures a rich, aromatic and strong coffee experience.
